Established in 1984, Believers Bassmen was the vision of long-time friends Johnny Speedling and Tony Byrd. Johnny was the Minister of Music and Youth and Tony was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at McDowell Road Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi.
Having participated in and coordinated many of the church’s brotherhood fishing trips, the two had the idea of sharing their love for God and the sport of bass fishing with men from all over the Jackson area.
By using tournament formats and offering participation to the public, the two soon realized how effective the Speedybird Bass Club would become. It didn’t take long for the successful club to appropriately adopt the name of Believers Bassmen, emphasizing its focus on Christian ministry and fellowship.
Through Believers Bassmen, believers of every Christian denomination travel and fish together in bass-rich waters throughout Mississippi and Louisiana. Through this fellowship with other believers, every member of the club has not only ministered, but been ministered to. Members make friendships and memories that will last forever, and the brotherhood is bonded even more tightly every time the club meets.
Believers Bassmen offers a non-threatening environment in which men can experience and share God’s love through association with other Christian outdoorsmen. Every member’s spiritual walk is strengthened as we enjoy God’s creation through the exciting sport of bass fishing. We believe that God intended for us to have a whole lot of fun while glorifying Him. We invite you to join the fun.
So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 10:32
